History of Newton County

by Walter F. Lackey

This is a great general history of Newton County, AR written in 1950, by Walter F. Lackey, a well known historian who grew up in Low Gap, Arkansas. The book has 432 pages plus an index that was added by members of the Newton County Historical Society when this book was reprinted by the Historical Society in 2005.  Sections of this book have been dedicated to the 1850 census which was the first census after the creation of Newton County,  early schools, first county officials, post offices, communities, old water mills and etc.  Over 130 pages contain biographies of some of the older people that Mr. Lackey had either met in his life time or did research on.   Cost is $29.95. A shipping and handling charge of $8, will be added at checkout.

The NEW OZARK COUSINS
by V. N. "Bud" Phillips 1984

The predecessor of this book was published in 1974 and had only a fraction of the families listed that this book does.    Ozark Cousins (1974) sold out quickly and Bud Phillips was inundated with letters from folks sending him more information on their families to be included in his next book or just praising him for the job he did on Ozark Cousins.   By 1984 he had enough extra information on some of the families scattered throughout  Newton, Boone, Searcy and Johnson counties for this 361 page book and he called it The New Ozark Cousins. It likewise quickly sold out.  In 2002, the Newton County Historical Society reprinted it with  the author's permission, and they included an index which was graciously provided by Mr. Bruce Peoples.    The cost is $25.  A shipping and handling charge of $8, will be added at checkout.
LOVE ALONG THE WAY
